BOOTLEG: EXCLUSIVE STRUNG OUT PREMIERE, “VANITY”
In our never-ending quest to give you the best music available, we present the Revolver Bootleg series. Throughout each month, we’ll post cool, new, and often-exclusive tracks right here for you to hear before anyone else.
This installment is “Vanity,” a song we’re premiering from the forthcoming album Agents of the Underground (Fat Wreck), by punks Strung Out. It’s the seventh full-length by the group, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year; it comes out next Tuesday. As an added bonus, we’ve also included a song that has previously hit the internet, “Black Crosses.” Vocalist Jason Cruz fills us in on “Vanity” below.
REVOLVER What’s “Vanity” about?
JASON CRUZ The truth is that sometimes I don’t know what the hell these things mean they just come out…I know I was personally going through a serious life-changing event at the time, and for what it’s worth, I don’t even remember writing a single word. I think the best songs are songs like that; they seem more pure and uncompromising, sincere.
Why do you think that is?
It seems when you overthink something and try to plan on how you want it to affect someone or something, it gets inhibited and becomes something else. I still listen to “Vanity” and learn something different every time about myself and what I was going through at the time. I do remember the melody coming right away, but the rest I couldn’t tell you.
What kind of feedback have you gotten bout the song so far?
Well, the rest of the band likes it a lot, and we think that everyone else will like it, too. The things that I’m most proud of with Strung Out are how completely honest and non-bullshit our music is to me, as well as our longevity and of course the loyal support we receive from our fans.

Wow
it is just as good as the other songs on the new record ! It's their best record yet, even beats Exile ! Long live Strung Out !
best band ever!!!
Strung Out has always been one of my favorite bands over the past 15 years or so, but over their last 3 albums they emerged to become my number one favorite. Other bands I have loved have either broken up or become super slow and boring (AFI, new Rise Against) but these guys continue to make great music. They are the most underrated rock/punk/metal band out there, its too band they have never made it big, but that might be the reason their music has actually stayed so good. I have only listened to this new album on myspace and I think it sounds great, already pre ordered it and cant wait to hear it through a good stereo! I will say I wasn't blown away yet with the exception of black crosses which I first heard a couple weeks ago and have listened to probably 100 times since. I know it will grow on me more though because I definately wasn't disappointed either. If I have one complaint, and I might take some heat for this one, some of the songs have too much layered guitar work, we've heard a ton of it on Exile and Blackhawks, which both I love. I just miss them throwing in a few straight ahead heavy crunching guitar chords like from Wasteland Blues. Still, totally amazing!
They've done it again!
i didn't like black crosses at first but as i've always found with strung out, it can take a few listens to get into their music. i gave it a chance and now i am blown away by it - it's amazing! the same can be said for vanity too - amazing!
long live strung out, i thought u had let me down this time but i was so very wrong!
yehhhh!!!!!
Incredible album once again.
Rob and Jake work so good together on guitar it makes me crazy how tight and technical they are.Jordan is just awesome on drums as usual.Jason and chris are awesome in this one as well. These guys all work so hard at this as i personally know because they are all like brothers to me and always have been since the beginning at the carpet coop in 1992.By the way thats when the band REALLY started.
SHRED IT UP BOYS!
good job gentlemen! i cant get enough of the new tunes!
"good together on guitars"
now go out an listen to A Wilhelm Scream. That's what you can call "so good together on guitar it makes me crazy".
But hey, it's hard to listen to them cause they don't sing like a mix of Britney Spears and Blink 182. what a shame. Why do people listen to pop music with a punk beat and think they are into punk rock?
